Curious how tobacco users might be at risk for COVID-19? According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “the act of smoking means that fingers (and possibly contaminated cigarettes) are in contact with lips which increases the possibility of transmission of virus from hand to mouth. Smokers may also already have lung disease or reduced lung capacity which would greatly increase risk of serious illness”. The WHO also has stated that behaviors such as smoking reduce the body’s ability to use oxygen, and ultimately may put those individuals at a higher risk of illnesses like pneumonia.
